Die österreichische Flötistin und Pädagogin Prof. Dr. Birgit Karoh studierte zunächst Instrumentalpädagogik mit dem Hauptfach Querflöte bei Bernhard Krabatsch sowie Angewandte Musikwissenschaft an der Universität Mozarteum Salzburg. Ihren Master im Konzertfach absolvierte sie am Conservatorio di Musica Giuseppe Tartini in Triest, Italien, bei der italienischen Meisterflötistin Luisa Sello.
Während ihrer Studienzeit vertiefte sie ihr flötistisch-künstlerisches und methodisches Können in zahlreichen Meisterkursen, unter anderem in Spanien, Italien, Österreich und den USA. Dabei arbeitete sie mit namhaften Flötistinnen und Flötisten wie András Adorján, Philippe Bernold, Laura Levai Aksin, Wil Offermans, János Bálint, Nina Assimakopoulos und Bernhard Wiesinger im Bereich Jazzflöte sowie mit zahlreichen weiteren Lehrenden.
Seit 2010 unterrichtet Birgit Karoh Querflöte, Ensemble und Elementare Musikpädagogik an niederösterreichischen Musikschulen. Darüber hinaus ist sie im Bereich Musik- und Vokalerziehung an einem Bundesgymnasium tätig. Ihre Schülerinnen und Schüler sind Wettbewerbspreisträger und nehmen an Talenteförderprogrammen teil.
Birgit Karoh veröffentlichte eine Querflötenschule beim Verlag Doblinger in Wien. Sie ist als internationale Jurorin bei Wettbewerben tätig, gibt Masterclasses sowie pädagogische Fortbildungen für Instrumentallehrende im In- und Ausland und tritt als Performing Artist auf.
Ihre Konzerttätigkeit führte sie durch Europa, die USA und China. Zu ihren Auftritten zählen unter anderem mehrfache Teilnahmen an der Convention der National Flute Association in den USA, am Festival „Darte“ in Italien, am Festival „Varna Summer“ unter Dr. Mario Hossen in Bulgarien, an der „Settimana della composizione“ unter Fabio Nieder in Italien, am Festival „Imago Sloveniae“ in Slowenien sowie am „Qing Dao Music Festival“ in China.
Als Initiatorin von Ensembles und Kammermusikerin ist sie in unterschiedlichsten Formationen aktiv. Zudem realisiert sie interdisziplinäre Projekte. Zuletzt gab sie im Rahmen des Wein/4-Festivals 2026 ihr Debüt als Stückentwicklerin mit „Der Faden“, das gemeinsam mit dem Theaterpädagogen und Regisseur Gregor Steiner entstand.
Ihr Doktorat in Flute Performance absolvierte Birgit Karoh an der New Bulgarian University in Sofia, Bulgarien. Unter Prof. Dr. Dr. Luisa Sello setzte sie sich dabei schwerpunktmäßig mit zeitgenössischer Musik für Querflöte und der Interpretation neuer Musik auseinander. Im Rahmen ihrer Arbeit gestaltete sie unter anderem einen Schwerpunkt zu den Zwölftonkompositionen von Dr. Rainer Bischof, dem ehemaligen Generalsekretär der Wiener Symphoniker, Komponisten und Philosophen.
Darüber hinaus erarbeitete sie in ihrer Dissertation einen Leitfaden zur Orientierung im Bereich zeitgenössischer Flötenmusik und ihrer Interpretation mittels „Variation“, der der Flötenwelt zugänglich sein wird.
Als Emotionscoach ist Birgit Karoh speziell für Musikerinnen und Musiker in den Bereichen Leistungsoptimierung und Bühnenpräsenz tätig.
Birgit Karoh ist Miyazawa Artist und spielt eine 14K-Goldflöte mit platinierten Silberklappen sowie eine Miyazawa Alto ST aus Vollsilber.

Austrian flutist and educator Prof. Dr. Birgit Karoh initially studied Instrumental Pedagogy with flute as her principal subject under Bernhard Krabatsch, as well as Applied Musicology at the Mozarteum University Salzburg. She completed her Master’s degree in Flute Performance at the Conservatorio di Musica Giuseppe Tartini in Trieste, Italy, under the renowned Italian flutist Luisa Sello.
During her studies, she further developed her artistic, methodological and flute-playing skills through numerous masterclasses in Spain, Italy, Austria and the United States. She worked with distinguished flutists including András Adorján, Philippe Bernold, Laura Levai Aksin, Wil Offermans, János Bálint, Nina Assimakopoulos and Bernhard Wiesinger, with whom she studied jazz flute, as well as many other internationally recognised teachers.
Since 2010, Birgit Karoh has taught flute, ensemble playing and elementary music education at music schools in Lower Austria. She also teaches music and vocal education at a federal secondary school. Her students have won prizes in competitions and participate in talent development programmes.
Birgit Karoh published a flute method with Doblinger Music Publishers in Vienna. She serves as an international competition jury member, gives masterclasses and professional development courses for instrumental teachers in Austria and abroad, and regularly appears as a performing artist.
Her concert activities have taken her throughout Europe, the United States and China. Her appearances include several performances at the National Flute Association Convention in the United States, the “Darte” Festival in Italy, the Varna Summer Festival under Dr Mario Hossen in Bulgaria, the “Settimana della composizione” under Fabio Nieder in Italy, the Imago Sloveniae Festival in Slovenia and the Qing Dao Music Festival in China.
As an ensemble founder and chamber musician, she performs in a wide variety of formations. She also develops and realises interdisciplinary projects. Most recently, she made her debut as a theatre-piece creator with “Der Faden” at the Wein/4 Festival 2026, in collaboration with theatre educator and director Gregor Steiner.
Birgit Karoh completed her doctorate in Flute Performance at New Bulgarian University in Sofia, Bulgaria. Under Prof. Dr. Dr. Luisa Sello, she focused on contemporary flute music and the interpretation of new music. As part of her research, she also explored the twelve-tone compositions of Dr Rainer Bischof, former Secretary General of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, composer and philosopher.
In addition, her dissertation includes a guide to contemporary flute music and its interpretation through “variation”, which will be made available to the international flute community as a source of orientation in this field.
As an emotion coach, Birgit Karoh works specifically with musicians in the areas of performance optimisation and stage presence.
Birgit Karoh is a Miyazawa Artist and plays a 14K gold flute with platinum-plated silver keys, as well as a solid silver Miyazawa Alto ST.
