Masterclass with Miyazawa International Artists Mario Caroli and Mario Notaristefano

Five days of intensive musical work, focused study and fresh inspiration: the Miyazawa Academy Masterclass combines individual flute tuition with practical preparation for auditions and competitions.

Active participants will receive four individual lessons with Miyazawa International Artists Mario Caroli and Mario Notaristefano. An audition simulation and a competition simulation, professional piano accompaniment, individual coaching and workshops focusing on expression and mental strength complete the programme.

The BDB-Musikakademie in Staufen im Breisgau provides ideal conditions for focused musical work: modern rooms with private bathrooms, teaching and rehearsal rooms equipped with pianos, and beautiful surroundings on the edge of the Black Forest.

Places are limited to a maximum of 16 active participants.
The course will take place with a minimum of 12 active participants.

Minimum Age 
Participation is limited to persons who are at least 18 years old on the first day of the masterclass. Unfortunately, applications from persons under the age of 18 cannot be accepted.

Monday, 8 March to Thursday, 11 March 2027

All active participants will receive a total of four individual lessons of 55 minutes each:

  • two lessons with Mario Caroli
  • two lessons with Mario Notaristefano
  • one of the four lessons with piano accompaniment by Katharina Kegler

The programme also includes:

  • a 30-minute individual coaching session with Mona Köppen on Monday or Tuesday
  • workshop: “The Power of Facial Expression in Music-Making” (held in German)
  • workshop: “Emotional.up – Emotional Skills Training for Mental Strength” (held in German)
  • individual practice time
  • opportunities for ensemble playing
  • opportunities to try Miyazawa solid silver and gold flutes

Friday, 12 March 2027

The final day will feature two practical simulations. Both will be held with piano accompaniment and professionally recorded on video for the active participants. Following the masterclass, each participant will receive their individual video recordings as digital files.

17:00: Faculty concert, followed by the presentation of the first, second and third prizes from the competition simulation
18:00: End of the event and departure

Audition Simulation

On Friday morning, active participants will present an audition programme lasting no longer than ten minutes.

Mozart Concerto

Exposition of the first movement, without cadenza, from one of the following concertos. Piano accompaniment will be provided by collaborative pianist Katharina Kegler:

  • W. A. Mozart: Flute Concerto in G major, K. 313
  • W. A. Mozart: Flute Concerto in D major, K. 314

Orchestral Excerpts (without piano accompaniment)

Prepare five orchestral excerpts of contrasting character, including:

  • three excerpts for flute
  • two excerpts for piccolo
  • The repertoire may be chosen freely by the participant. The jury will select two or three of the prepared excerpts for performance.

After the simulation, each participant will receive a short individual feedback session.

Competition Simulation

On Friday afternoon, active participants will present a competition programme lasting no longer than five minutes.

Required Piece

One work of the participant’s choice from the following selection. Piano accompaniment will be provided by collaborative pianist Katharina Kegler:

  • George Enescu: Cantabile et Presto
  • Gabriel Fauré: Fantaisie, Op. 79
  • Philippe Gaubert: Nocturne et Allegro scherzando

Free-Choice Piece

  • one freely chosen work for solo flute

Total performance time must not exceed five minutes.

Prize Money

  • 1st prize: EUR 400
  • 2nd prize: EUR 300
  • 3rd prize: EUR 200

Active Participation

The programme package for active participants includes:

  • four individual lessons of 55 minutes each

  • participation in both workshops with Mona Köppen
  • participation in the audition simulation
  • individual feedback following the audition simulation

  • each participant will receive digital video recordings of their performances in both simulations after the masterclass
  • five nights’ accommodation including breakfast (Sunday arrival, Friday departure)

  • coffee and cake on five days, Monday to Friday
  • five buffet dinners, Sunday to Thursday
  • teaching and rehearsal rooms equipped with pianos
  • additional opportunities for individual practice and participant-organised ensemble playing
  • unlimited access to a dedicated piano practice room throughout the day (via a sign-up system)
  • practice in the bedrooms is possible with the agreement of your roommate(s)
  • opportunities to try Miyazawa solid silver and gold flutes
  • modern rooms, each with a private bathroom
